Chelsea FC cemented their position at the top of Group E after matching their record UEFA Champions League win, while there were also home victories for AC Milan and FC Barcelona as the group stage reached the halfway point on Wednesday night.
Fernando Torres struck twice for Chelsea as they maintained their one-point lead over Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Both sides pulled away from Valencia CF in third, though, after the German outfit struck twice in four second-half minutes to overturn a 1-0 half-time deficit.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic registered for the second UEFA Champions League home game in a row and Kevin-Prince Boateng struck one of the goals of the night as Milan stayed on top of Group H following a 2-0 victory against FC BATE Borisov. Holders Barcelona are also six points clear of the bottom two in that section after recording an identical success against FC Viktoria Plzen. The Italian and Spanish giants know wins on matchday four will seal knockout berths.
Group G is still tight after two draws. APOEL FC continued their impressive form in Europe with a battling 1-1 draw at FC Porto, while FC Shakhtar Donetsk and FC Zenit St Petersburg shared four goals in a highly entertaining encounter in Donetsk. Zenit twice came from behind to earn a point.
Arsenal FC denied Olympique de Marseille a third straight win in Group F as a late Aaron Ramsey strike earned the Gunners all three points. Arsène Wenger's side are top of the section while Olympiacos FC got off the mark with a 3-1 win against Borussia Dortmund, replacing the German side in third place.
All fixtures will be reversed on matchday four, when the UEFA Champions League resumes on 1 November.
